What You Missed on Twitter

Good Morning, Social Rabbit here with your guide to the world of social media.

Last week I had a few requests from people who after Christmas feel that getting back up to speed on the social media is rather overwhelming with all the other post holiday catch up stuff.  So this week I will post each day on what you might have missed if you haven’t been on x, y or z for a while :)

Today I am going to start with Twitter, because if like me you tend to not actually really use Twitter.com, but instead use Tweetdeck or Hootsuite or another platform for accessing your tweets you may not know what has actually happened on the Twitter site.

The Timeline

I don’t think that this has changed recently, but feel free to correct me if I am wrong!  But one thing you may not know about is that you can expand Tweets as I have done below by clicking on the arrow in the top right corner of the tweet.  This can give you more information about who has retweeted it, where they sent it from, and basically it is just bigger (if you struggle with the small text!)how to see more information on your tweets on the timeline

8 Reasons to Play with Backtype

Good morning, Social Rabbit here with your guide to the world of social media.

Last week I found an interesting website called Backtype.  This site lets you measure your brand’s social impact and engagement  - it tells you when and how often your website content is shared on social networks such as Twitter, digg, reddit etc.

Below is the engagement results for this website, a total of 765 tweets over all time and you can see there was a BIG spike on 30th May when I released the 30 LinkedIn Tips (thanks tweeters :) ).  I saw this and thought boo, you guys don’t share that much, but if I average it out over all blog posts that is roughly 2.1 tweets per post, so not that bad really (this Rabbit is rather a high achiever!).  More importantly what I liked seeing from this is who is sharing the content, as I don’t see that normally, and it gives me a reason to go and chat to those people.

Facebook or Twitter – which should you use?

Good Morning, Social Rabbit here with your guide to the world of social media.

Decide whether to use Facebook or Twitter (or one of the hundreds of other social media sites) to promote your business can be hard.  I’ve tried to give you the pro’s and con’s for both, however, there is no right or wrong answer as to which you choose – it depends on you and your business.

For those you who aren’t using Facebook or Twitter for business I will explain what they are.  Facebook has three types of accounts; personal profiles, pages and groups.  Businesses use pages which people (who have a Facebook personal profile) “like”, once they have liked the page they get posts from the page are seen in their personal newsfeed.  However, your page doesn’t get sent the posts that the people who like the page send, unless they are posting on the page wall or commenting on a page post.

Sharing Buttons Good, Bad or Ugly?

Good Afternoon, Social Rabbit here with your guide to the world of social media.

A new chart out from Marketing Sherpa shows the buttons that companies add to their email newsletters to get people to share the content.  No huge surprises that the winner is Facebook, as per the graph below.  Considering that Facebook is the most widely used social network it should be up there.

Twitter with 88% of companies adding it is to me rather surprising, partly because there are only about 200 million people using Twitter (only you say!).  Of these 42% have 1-5 people following them and about 24% have no one following them, leaving about 68 million people with over 5 followers, or as Mashable found Twitter reaches about 10% of internet users.  Just because people have heard about Twitter doesn’t mean that they are using it or even just looking at it.  But on the other hand tweets do appear in Google real time search results which non-Twitter users can see, which may lead to people coming back to your website….
