One way to find out what social networks your contacts are on…

Good Evening, Social Rabbit here with your guide to the world of social media.

I think that deep down everyone is a bit nosy… they like to see what other people are up to.  This new website www.Flowtown.com lets you find out what social networks your contacts are using/registered on.  But why do you want to know that?

  • To copy what they are doing because you admire them
  • To know how to contact them
  • To know where to NOT go to avoid them
  • To connect with them

I signed for a free 5 day account with Flowtown this week to see what it was all about, as yes I was curious, what were my contacts up to…  With the free account you can upload up to 50 contacts (they don’t tell you this in the FAQs, to be honest there isn’t much info at all on the site – if you are reading this Flowtown you should fix it up otherwise you will lose potential customers).

I uploaded my 800 odd contacts from Outlook (downloaded them to a CSV file then uploaded them), all you need is the email address for each contact.  However you need to bear in mind that the email address you have may NOT be the email address that they use to access social networks.  For example if you know someone professionally and have their work email address, they may also have a gmail address that they use for social networking – this isn’t fool proof, and again Flowtown don’t mention this.

Basically how it works is that Flowtown checks the email address with the various social networks (no I don’t know which ones, they don’t say – seeing a theme here yet?).  Then reports back a list of what each person is connected to.  Below is the dashboard you get after you have imported your contacts.

Note: I have covered up my contacts email addresses, just in case!

As you can see above it doesn’t look as if many of my contacts are using social media and yet I know that they are – this is when the email address is different.  You can also see their Twitter influence by Klout in the little white boxes on the right, this is basically how active they are on Twitter, how many people follow them, Klout’s definition is the “ability to drive people to action”…. 15 minutes later after playing on Klout, I have decided I will write a blog post on this later, it’s fascinating!

Back to Flowtown, you can look at your contacts with the insights tool, see below, so I can see of the 37 contacts who imported properly (some didn’t make it!) 10% are on Facebook, 14% are on LinkedIn etc.  I can also see the age of my contacts, gender and location.

Well my overall thoughts on this are… it’s sounds cool and funky, and fun to play with, but in reality might not be quite so useful, it gives you a chance to stickybeak (that’s Aussie for being nosy) into what your friends/colleagues/contacts are on, but only IF you have the right email from them.  To give an example, I use mostly the one email address, but it depends on the network, what it’s for and how I am using it.  So buyer be aware!

Just so you know if you want to import more contacts after your first 50 it costs from 4c a contact, plus a monthly fee.  You can use it set up autoresponders connected to Twitter and Emails, but why bother?  There are a lot of better tools out there to use.

On a final note I typed in my own email address, only to find out that I am male, aged 18-24 and living in Australia.  I guess one out of 3 isn’t bad, but I wouldn’t recommend trusting it for business!

If you’ve used Flowtown tell me how it’s worked for you below or on the Social Rabbit Facebook Page.

Facebook Friday: I Give A Buck

Good Morning, Social Rabbit here with your guide to the world of social media.

Today’s Facebook Friday page is a charity called I Give a Buck! Foundation of Australia Ltd.  Their mission is to raise $100k a year for disadvantaged Aussie kids.

What’s working:

  • They have their username – tick :)
  • Regular posting (daily by the looks of it)
  • Good commenting when others comment
  • The video is great, there should be more of these types of videos, or even use the content from the video (the facts) on the page

What to Improve:

  • The website address in the text box under the logo needs to have http:// so that it hyperlinks, however they have put it next to their founded date as well, so maybe they should save the space in the text box and use it to explain more about what they are doing using keywords.
  • There are numerous typos (text and numbers) in the text box and on the info tab, not a good look
  • The logo gets lost on the page, as the text is very small and it doesn’t really give a good idea of what they do, prehaps put a picture of a child that they have helped and the amount of money it took, to give people a real idea of what it is all about
  • Get a landing/welcome tab, I say this EVERY week, but no one listens to me :(   IT makes a MASSIVE difference, you could ask people to donate straight off the landing page and link it back to your site, you could have a newsletter sign up box on there and include the video that is on the side of the page
  • The page posts don’t engage people enough, there aren’t many comments, they need to be asking questions, talking about the children that they are raising money for, getting opinions and basically getting people involved.
  • The posts on the page also assume that people know what is going on, for example, the post on the entertainment books, when posting don’t assume that people know anything and help them out
  • There is nothing on the discussions tab, so either start a discussion or ditch it
  • There is a poster for Penny’s appeal on the website, this should be included in the photo album on Penny to help people understand more about it
  • The boxes tab and the notes tab contain exactly the same information, so I would get rid of the boxes tab and keep the notes tab.  The notes tab could be used for an ongoing update on the appeals
  • Could you add a store tab to the page so people can donate straight from the page using paypal?
  • Videos are a very powerful medium with this kind of charity, why not use video to pull at people’s heart-strings?  maybe a parent testimonial
  • The priority kids program is mentioned on a post, but there is nothing else about it, I think what confuses me on this page, and the website is that it talks about giving a buck to an appeal of your choice on the website and that their aim is to change the life of children, but in actual fact there is only one running for Penny.  I am not saying that this is a bad thing, but why not focus people’s effort on that appeal and change the profile picture and info box to reflect this, if there is only going to be one child supported at the time then focus on that one rather than making it generic.
  • If the goal is $100k a year, why not have a tally ongoing, either in the form of an app or just written in the info box, so people can see clearly what has been achieved and that they are making a difference
  • What about creating a virtual gifting app that people pay for and the money all goes to the foundation
  • Maybe make it more visual as to what has been achieved, with a photo of the item the money is being raised for but blank out part of the item and as more money is raised more of the item is revealed.
  • What about telling people how you actually decide which children you fundraise for?  Can people nominate children?
  • Try posting on other relevant pages to encourage traffic back to the page, eg go to children’s products pages or parenting pages

Obviously charities are up against a lot of competition for people’s cash, so the challenge is to make it easy for people to donate, so this needs to be looked at, and also make it easy for people to understand what their money goes towards.  Do not assume that people will go to the website to find out, make it easy for them.

Hopefully this blog post will help I Give A Buck to increase the number of visitors to their page.  If you have any other suggestions for them please post them on their Facebook page, or the Social Rabbit page.  If you’d like your page reviewed by the Chief Rabbit please click here!

More Facebook changes…

Good Morning, Social Rabbit here with your guide to the world of social media.

You may have woken up today, and said “oh no” more Facebook changes and gone back to bed, or like this little bunny bounced out of bed and hit the net to see what it was all about.  For those still in bed here’s a summary.

You will have a note at the top of your personal profile page, and when you click on it this is what you get…

Facebook are trying to integrate their site (platform) with other sites (platforms) to compete with Google.  So they have formed alliances with,

  • Microsoft docs: an online version of Microsoft office that lets you share the docs with your Facebook friends.  However this is still in beta (which means it’s still being tested) and so you can’t just join you have to request to join and then wait until they let you in, which sucks!
  • Yelp: “Yelp is the fun and easy way to find, review and talk about what’s great – and not so great, in your area” (or so they say…).  However for us in Australia you can’t use it, unless it’s for the USA, it is all USA cities – way to go Zuck (Mark Zuckerberg, apparently facebookers call him Zuck)
  • Pandora: Internet radio/music, but can’t be used outside of the USA, once again really helpful

Overall conclusion on these, WAY TO USA focused!  Considering that only around 25% of Facebook users are from the USA, this doesn’t work for me.  The Microsoft docs could be good when I can actually use it, as it means that I can write word, excel and powerpoint docs online from any pc, which could be great for travelling.  Let’s hope that Zuck works with some more GLOBAL companies to get sites that benefit everyone.

Plus there are

  • Social plugins which you can add to your website (no coding required) so you can see which of your friends like something
  • Applications will now only ask for what they need for the app to work, and if they ask for more you can choose not to give it to them

If you want to see Zuck telling us how it will affect you personally check out the video from Mashable.

Basically Facebook are trying to take over the world!  OK, well maybe not this week…  What do you think of these changes?
