Lara Solomon is the owner and director of LaRoo. Starting her own business has always been a passion of hers. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur Lara worked in marketing on the following brands – Windex, Mr Muscle, Dettol, Lemsip, Conair, Vidal Sassoon hair appliances, British Airways and Cuisinart. She studied at University of the West of England in Bristol, UK gaining a Business degree (specialising in marketing). Marketing is Lara’s passion.
LaRoo was started by Lara in 2004 when she launched the Mocks brand and created the market for sock covers in Australia. Mocks are sock covers for mobile phones, digital cameras and iPods, there are over 80 different designs. Mocks protect gadgets from scratching as well as personalising them. People mix and match their Mock to where they are going, how they are feeling and what they are wearing. With 3 Mocks owned on average by each Mocker, these have become not only the generic name for phone socks, but also a collectors item. To date over 1.6 million Mocks have been sold worldwide. Lara’s first book: Brand New Day – The Highs and Lows of Starting a Small Business was published in 2008. It is the diary of her first four years in business – from 2004 to 2007. There is an entry or 2 every week and at the end of each month she says how much money she has in the bank, how she is feeling and what is happening with staff. Lara wrote it feeling that there were a lot of people in small business who were having issues and feeling that it was them, but in fact they were facing problems that are common to all small businesses. Social Rabbit was born in 2010 when Lara recognised a need for small, medium and large businesses to take advantage of social media – in particular Facebook. After huge success with the Mocks fan page (over 12,000 fans in 3 months), Lara started Social Rabbit to educate people through hands on workshops and offer consultation to larger companies to enable them to have the same success.
2011 saw Lara use the insights she gained from training people in social media to launch Steps. Steps is an online training program for Facebook pages and LinkedIn. It is suitable for complete beginners or more advanced users, much more affordable than hiring Lara one on one, or attending a workshop. Lara and Social Rabbit are as of November 12th 2011 no longer involved in this business.
Nowadays, Lara is pretty busy with her businesses, plus she does public speaking on topics such as social media (surprise, surprise), marketing, business startups, exporting, Facebook, LinkedIn and more.
