Have You Seen the NEW Facebook Insights?

Good Afternoon, Social Rabbit here with your guide to the world of social media.

I was EXCEPTIONALLY excited to see the new Facebook page insights, so much so that I was very nearly bouncing out of my skin!  I’m just going to focus on the new bits of the insights in this post.

Have you seen them?

First of all they are now on the left of the wall under the friend activity tab, which makes it easier to find them – for the pages that you are not an admin for you don’t see the insights tab on the list.  The old insights are still there on the right of your page if you want to see them.  The new insights give you three options to view….

  • Fans
  • Reach
  • Talking about this

Below you can see my insights when I click on the tab.  I love that I can see the friends of fans, ie so there are 4406 people who like my page and in total they have 2.3million friends.  What this means is that if I was to get everyone on the page to share/like/comment on a post then potentially 2.3million people would see it in their newsfeed – now the challenge is to do that!

The image below is new to insights, with a graph of reach and talking about this.  This is interesting to see that, for example around Sept 29 reach (in blue) had a spike, but talking about this didn’t.  Reach is the number who have seen the story that day and talking about is if they click LIKE, comment or post on the wall.  The posts section wasn’t working when I did this.

facebook page insights october 2011

The second image below is of the page posts by day.  Rather than previously being given a percentage, Facebook are now giving actual numbers.  The line the bubble is on on October 5th you can see that the post reached 808 people, of them 46 were engaged, you can see from the bubble, that most of them clicked the link – the others clicked on something else, but not LIKE.  None of the 808 people talked about the post, ie didn’t share, LIKE or comment on it, therefore the virality is 0%.  Obviously you want to get the virality as high as possible because that means that people are sharing the content and therefore more are seeing it.

page post insights

Each of the numbers in the new post statistics can be clicked on and give you more information.  It’s great to see that Facebook now gives more details, for example on the reach you can see if it’s paid, organic or viral.

I find it interesting, that the post that got one of the highest reaches, had no virality, but imagine if it had been interesting enough for people to share?  Obviously this post caught people’s attention enough to click, but not enough to share….

In the image (in the reach section of the insights) below you can see how you reached people.  You can choose between all content, just your posts or others posts.  In the graph on the left you can see the blue line is the people on my page who it reached, the pink line is those who it reached through those people, i.e. they shared the content.  Just be aware that each point is the data for the 7 days ending in the day the point is on, so unfortunately I don’t know exactly what was seen on that day.

The unique users by frequency shows in the last week the number of times people saw your content, so for mine most people just saw it once, but some people saw it over 21 times.  Obviously I want people to look at content as much as possible, and that is a sign of good quality content if people keep coming back to look at more knowing that it’s a good place for information.

insights on how you reached people

Finally in the talking about this section, it shows the demographics of who is talking about (ie liking, commenting and sharing) content on your page.  You may find here that although your demographics are spread widely by age range for your page as a whole, it is a certain age group or location who are doing all the talking!

The screen shot below shows you HOW people are talking about your page.  In the talking about this section (blue line) you can choose from all stories, page likes, comments, photo tags and wall posts.  Again you want as many people talking about you as possible, and for best engagement you want comments rather than LIKES.  This graph makes it really easy to see at a snapshot just how engaged your audience are and which days of the week they chat more.

I am now going to set some goals around talking about my page, since the more people talking the more the word will spread.

The viral reach chart shows the number of people who saw your page from a friend talking about it, this could have been a like, comment, wall post, photo tag or share.  I think that this adds in a bit of a level of reward for the page admins, no longer am I thinking only 100 talked about it that day, but instead 2500 saw it.

Facebook have put together a page insights guide for further information that you can download from your page, but otherwise if you aren’t sure what something means click on the blue ? next to the term for more information.  You can also download the data in an excel spreadsheet to look at/manipulate.

Facebook are moving more and more towards pushing everything onto the wall, and these new insights at least show that while they do that they also are supporting the push with some decent statistics.  What do you think of the new insights?  Are you as excited as I am?
